Kohima: Nagaland must root mineral development in constitutional protections. Advisor for Geology and Mining W. Chingang Konyak delivered this directive at the 46th State Geological Programming Board meeting in Dimapur. The session took place Friday at Hotel Saramati.

Konyak insists local communities remain central to any excavation projects. The state sits on coal, limestone, petroleum, and natural gas. These resources belong to the people. "Our objective must be responsible development-one that creates wealth without degrading the environment or undermining community rights," he stated.

Mineral wealth should drive jobs and local industry. Raw material exports must drop. Konyak wants a strict, time-bound roadmap to stop unsafe mining that leaks revenue and wrecks the land. He told the Geological Survey of India and other technical groups to stop duplicating work.

John Kevi Angami, Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Geology and Mining, chaired the event. He warned the board against viewing these meetings as routine paperwork. The department needs fresh, innovative work from young scientists. Angami also noted that the team must focus on geo-hazards and landslides. Director Newmai Asingbow opened the meeting. Officials spent the technical session reviewing the 45th meeting records and approving the 2027 to 2028 field season program.
