Nagaland Leads in Female Faculty, Trails in College Enrollment

Kohima: Nagaland boasts a high number of female educators. The state ranks third nationally in gender representation among faculty, with 143 female teachers for every 100 males. Only Kerala and Punjab report higher numbers. National averages sit at 82 women for every 100 men.

Enrollment numbers tell a different story. Nagaland recorded a Gross Enrolment Ratio of 18.4, ranking as the second lowest state in India. Bihar sits lower at 17.7. The national average reaches 30.0. The state saw a slight dip from 18.9 in 2022-23.

Women still dominate the local student body. Females account for 55 percent of total enrollment, with 27,441 women compared to 22,465 men. This trend holds steady across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs. The Gender Parity Index in Nagaland reached 1.33, beating the national average of 1.08.

The AISHE report states, "Nagaland's GER for the 18-23 age group stood at 18.4." This puts the state well below the national mark. There are 104 higher education institutions in the region, including six universities. Every single one participated in the survey, providing a 100 percent response rate.
