Nagaland Launches Statewide Family Planning Campaign

Kohima: Health departments across Nagaland marked World Population Day on Saturday by kicking off a week-long drive to improve reproductive health. The campaign runs through July 18. Medical staff are fanning out to promote healthy pregnancy spacing and maternal safety.

Events took place in Dimapur, Mokokchung, Peren, and Phek. Officials emphasized that the goal is not just population control. It is about personal choice. Dimapur Chief Medical Officer Dr. T. Yetovi Tuccu said, "Every pregnancy should be by choice and stressed the need for counselling couples on the range of family planning options available so they could make informed decisions based on their needs and preferences."

Local clinics are offering free services during the week. These include sterilisation for men and women, condom distribution, and emergency contraceptives. Doctors are also pushing for IUCD insertions. Frontline workers are tasked with mobilizing village committees to refer patients to district hospitals.

Health units in Mokokchung and Phek are leaning on local networks. ASHAs and village health committees will guide couples toward government clinics. They want to boost institutional deliveries and early antenatal care. Medical officers plan to spend the coming days holding focus group discussions and handing out educational materials to the public.
