Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh kicked off the Uningthou Uyok plantation drive Saturday at the SEEDS Complex in Imphal West. The effort targets large-scale growth and genetic protection of the Uningthou, the official tree of Manipur. It marks a push to boost the state's conservation footprint.

Multiple groups run the show. The NGO SEEDS, the Editors Guild Manipur, and the state Environment and Climate Change Department lead the work. The Manipur Forest Department and Manipur University provide support. This project ties into wider environmental goals, including the Greening Imphal mission and local Miyawaki forest restoration.

Crews previously planted trees in the Nongmaiching Hill Range and built conservation blocks at the SEEDS Complex. After the launch, Khemchand toured Olympian Park to check the infrastructure. He ordered staff to fix the water supply and get the park ready for the public.

Khemchand said the revival of public recreational spaces is important as peace and normalcy gradually return to the state. High-ranking officials, including MLA Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh and police housing chief L. Kailun, watched the event unfold.
