Kohima: The Labour Commissioner of Nagaland has issued a directive requiring all employers, industries, and contractors to implement safety protocols to protect workers from the state's extreme heatwave conditions. This move follows guidance from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, which recently urged all states to adopt proactive measures to ensure the health and welfare of their workforce during the summer months.
Employers are now required to adjust work schedules to minimize exposure during peak temperature hours. The department suggests that heavy or strenuous labor should be reserved for cooler parts of the day. Companies must also offer flexible scheduling and provide frequent rest breaks to help staff manage the heat.
To maintain a safe environment, workplaces must provide access to cool drinking water, shaded areas, and rest shelters. Sites are required to keep emergency first aid supplies, such as ice packs and heat illness kits, on hand. If a worker exhibits signs of heat stress, dehydration, or exhaustion, they must receive immediate medical attention.
The department has instructed employers to run awareness campaigns through posters, banners, and training sessions to educate staff on the risks of heat-related illnesses. These safety mandates are effective immediately and will remain in place throughout the duration of the heatwave season.
