Kohima: Nagaland honored 56 high-achieving students from indigenous Scheduled Tribes on Thursday. The state Education Department hosted the ceremony at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima. These students earned the Chief Minister’s Meritorious Students Fellowship for their top marks in the 2026 HSLC exams.
Girls dominated the honors list. Forty-three of the 56 winners are female. This trend shows a sharp rise in academic success among young women across the state.
Adviser to the School Education Department Kekhrielhoulie Yhomes presented the awards. He pushed the students to maintain their high standards. "Remain humble, remember your roots and contribute positively to society in the future," he told the crowd.
The fellowship offers more than just a certificate. Winners get financial support for five years. However, the cash comes with a catch. Recipients must score at least 80 percent on their yearly exams to keep the funding active. Nagaland Board of School Education Chairperson Rangumbuing Nsarangbe said the program highlights the government push for academic excellence.
