Kohima: Guru Sangyusang Pongener scored the 2026 Padma Shri for his long fight to save Ao Naga folk traditions. He spent sixty years protecting the music and dances of his people from fading away. The Ungma village native turned a childhood love for storytelling into a lifelong mission.

Pongener founded the Naga Wadir Club in 1982 to train new talent. He taught over 2,000 students to play, dance, and preserve their heritage. This work stopped important cultural markers from disappearing during decades of rapid social shifts.

State leaders celebrated the news. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio praised the veteran artist for his commitment to the state. Jacob Zhimomi noted, "Having dedicated his whole life towards preservation and promotion of indigenous Naga folk traditions, Nagaland is extremely proud of him for this befitting recognition."

The award honors a man who kept ancient stories alive. For the people of Nagaland, this is a win for their identity.
