Nagaland Communities Launch School Clean-Up Campaign

Kohima: Communities across Nagaland are scrubbing up the streets. The initiative, dubbed Our School, Our Responsibility, aims to clean the first 100 metres surrounding local campuses. This stretch serves as the daily path for students. Organizers include Shikshalokam’s mantra4change and YouthNet.

The drive kicked off on September 15. This date marks the International Day of Democracy. The work wraps up on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and Swachh Bharat Diwas. Officials want to instill civic pride. They also hope to keep waste out of areas where kids walk, wait, and play every day. Organizers said, "The first 100 metres around a school are part of a child’s everyday journey, and keeping these spaces clean and safe is a shared responsibility of the community."

Crews targeted five districts this week. Cleanup events hit Kohima, Kiphire, Tseminyu, Tuensang, and Mon. The effort started at Government High School Chingmelen in Tuensang. Workers then moved to Kiphire’s Government High School Yangphi and the Government Middle School in PHE Ward. Tseminyu hosted events at the local Government Primary School and the Government Higher Secondary School.

Additional cleanups occurred at Kano Memorial School in Tizit Village on September 25. The following day, crews hit Government Primary School Longphaoh Village and Government Primary School Kenuozou. These groups now look to keep the momentum going. They want safer, healthier surroundings for every student.
