Kohima: Nagaland Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen conducted an on-site inspection of various flood-affected and vulnerable zones across Dimapur and East Dimapur on Monday. Accompanied by district administration officials, he evaluated critical locations, including Nagarjan Police Point, Vilhume, S.M. Colony, the East Block Burma Camp near Narkul Turning, the DMC dumping site at Sunrise Colony, and the New Field Check Gate to prepare for the approaching monsoon season.
During the visit, officials identified systemic issues such as drainage encroachment, inadequate infrastructure, and pervasive clogs caused by improper plastic waste disposal. In a subsequent review meeting focused on urban management and flood mitigation, Imchen proposed installing strainers across upstream channels to capture debris. He suggested that similar preventive designs should be incorporated into future check dams and drainage projects as funding allows.
Addressing the broader sanitation crisis, the Chief Secretary noted that the current waste dumping site is nearing capacity, largely due to a lack of household-level segregation. He emphasized that municipal bodies will be held accountable for solid waste management and instructed officials to improve the maintenance and utility of existing service vehicles. Imchen called for enhanced inter-departmental cooperation among the State Disaster Management Authority, local police, and public health agencies to resolve these recurring challenges.
The Chief Secretary urged civil society organizations, the Naga Council, and the general public to collaborate on removing encroachments and maintaining urban cleanliness. He concluded by calling for intensified public awareness campaigns, encouraging residents to participate in waste segregation efforts and fulfill sanitation fee obligations to ensure more sustainable urban practices.
