Imphal: Representatives from the Naga and Meitei communities have launched a joint platform called the Native Peoples' Committee Manipur. Formed during a meeting in Imphal on May 26, the organization aims to protect the identity, land, and dignity of the state's indigenous populations for the benefit of future generations.

The committee is structured to ensure balanced leadership, with equal representation for both ethnic groups among its executive members and office bearers. Ashang Kasar was appointed as the convener, working alongside co-conveners Ph Deban and Dr L Phaomei.

The group has outlined a specific policy agenda, including calls for the removal of the Assam Rifles from the state and the cancellation of the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant groups. Additionally, members are demanding the immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens in Manipur. The committee plans to host a public convention for indigenous groups on June 2, 2026, at Makhan village.
