N. Biren Singh Calls for Investigation Into Manipur Village Growth

Imphal: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has requested a thorough investigation into village expansion patterns across the state's hill districts. Using statistics from 1972 and 2023, he highlighted a sharp rise in village numbers that he believes requires official scrutiny.

Data shared by Biren Singh shows the total count of villages across Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Senapati, and Ukhrul grew from 754 to 1,865 over five decades. Most of this growth occurred in Kangpokpi and Churachandpur, which together accounted for nearly 95 percent of the new additions. While the former Chief Minister noted that the statistics do not explain the underlying reasons for the trend, he emphasized that the data warrants a systematic review.

Regarding the statistical evidence, Biren Singh stated, "The anomaly is not a matter of opinion; it is visible in the data." He suggested that authorities should examine land records, census information, satellite imagery, and migration patterns to understand why certain areas expanded significantly faster than others.

Potential explanations for these figures range from administrative bifurcation and the recognition of previously unrecorded settlements to broader demographic and migration shifts. Although these findings address sensitive topics regarding land governance and boundary debates, no independent or official inquiry into the claims has been announced. Observers indicate that any definitive conclusion will require a long-term analysis of historical documents and administrative procedures.
