Kohima: Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir led a district development meeting on June 24 at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Phek. He pushed local officials to get the word out about government programs. Public awareness remains low. Jamir told attendees that with government jobs drying up, residents must turn to farming and animal husbandry to make a living.
The MP turned his attention to the old age pension program. He discovered that the state added zero new beneficiaries since 2017. Jamir vowed to press the ministry for answers. He also called for faster payouts for victim compensation, stating, "He also stressed the need for timely disbursement of victim compensation and elimination of unnecessary delays."
Kudecho Khamo, advisor for CAWD, thanked the MP for his ongoing work. He warned department heads that accurate record-keeping is non-negotiable. Officials must track data on the elderly, widows, and people with disabilities to secure funding. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Rhousietho Nyuthe noted that while POCSO cases are climbing, the rise actually points to better reporting habits.
Staff from education, social welfare, and animal husbandry gave reports during the session. Officials also discussed fixes for the district's patchy telecommunication network. The meeting wrapped up with the group planting trees to mark the occasion.
