Motorist Survives After Boulder Crushes Vehicle on Shillong-Dawki Road

Shillong: A motorist narrowly avoided injury on Wednesday morning when a massive boulder tumbled onto their vehicle along the Laitlyngkot-Lyngkyrdem stretch of the Shillong-Dawki road. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near Laitmawiong, leaving the vehicle, registered as BRO-1KC-3563, severely damaged.

Continuous drizzle throughout the morning likely loosened the soil and triggered the slide, according to local sources. The area is increasingly vulnerable to slope instability as the monsoon season progresses. Although the accident occurred on a section of the road not currently under construction, authorities are tightening safety measures across the route.

The Pynursla Civil Sub-Division has implemented daily traffic restrictions effective June 11 to protect commuters and facilitate heavy machinery operations. Under the new mandate, the road will close from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. until further notice.

Assistant Public Relations Officer at Ace Construction, Tes Khongkrom, stated that "the road would be periodically closed to facilitate construction and ensure public safety." Emergency services are exempt from these closures, provided they receive safety clearance from site authorities. Officials have warned the public to avoid non-essential travel during periods of heavy rain and at night to mitigate the risk of further landslides.
