Motok Student Groups Protest in Tinsukia Over Infrastructure and Cost of Living

Guwahati: Members of the Sadou Asom Motok Yuva Chatra Parishad and the Sadou Asom Motok Chatra Sanstha held a demonstration at Thana Chariali in Tinsukia on June 1. The student groups gathered to demand government intervention on several pressing public concerns and later submitted a formal memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma via the Tinsukia District Commissioner.

The organizations presented seven core demands, starting with an urgent request for the government to curb the rising costs of fuel, LPG cylinders, and essential goods. Protesters argued that these price hikes have placed an unsustainable financial burden on local residents. They also highlighted the deteriorating state of district roads, which they claim is hindering development and disrupting daily commutes.

Healthcare and safety also took center stage in the memorandum. The groups called for upgrades to Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital, including the recruitment of more doctors and improved facility maintenance. Additionally, the protesters demanded tougher enforcement against drug trafficking rings to shield the youth from addiction, while calling for the removal of illegal encroachments on public land.

The final pillar of their request focuses on cultural preservation. The student bodies urged officials to protect historical monuments and heritage sites significant to the Motok community. Leaders from both organizations emphasized that these requests represent the urgent needs of the local population and urged state and district authorities to take immediate, effective action.
