Mizoram Selects Design for New Vanapa Hall and Park in Aizawl

Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma selected Catalyst Architecture Studio to design the new Vanapa Hall and Park. The reveal happened July 20 at an event held by the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Department. This site sits on land formerly occupied by the Assam Rifles.

The project aims to give Aizawl a fresh identity. Officials want better roads, parks, and civic hubs to manage the city's fast growth. An advisory committee now guides the planning of the space. Government leaders plan to request money from the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North East Region scheme to fund the build. The cash is not yet approved.

Urban Development Minister K. Sapdanga stated the government wants a modern, vibrant city. Lalduhoma emphasized the vision for the area during the presentation. "Vanapa Hall and Park will be the most visible and recognisable public gathering place in Aizawl. We want to create a beautiful, functional and safe landmark in the heart of the city, a place that immediately comes to mind when people think of Aizawl," Lalduhoma said.

The search for a design started March 17. Judges reviewed 33 entries from across India. They picked six finalists before choosing the winner after three months of work.
