Aizawl: Mizoram took the top spot at the North East Regional Muaythai Championship. The event wrapped up on September 24 in Aizawl. Around 350 fighters from eight northeastern states battled in 100 different categories. The Mizoram Muaythai Association organized the massive competition. Meghalaya walked away as the first runner-up, while Tripura snagged the second runner-up position.
Muaythai uses fists, elbows, knees, and shins. The ancient martial art traces its roots to Thailand. Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma joined the closing ceremony to celebrate the winners. He praised the sport for its growing global reach and professional potential. Even without Olympic status, it offers real careers.
Lalduhoma pointed to local athlete Nazareth Lalthazuala as a clear success story. Lalthazuala recently signed a contract with ONE Championship, a top-tier martial arts group. The chief minister believes these contact sports fit the regional talent pool perfectly. "Muaythai had emerged as a prominent contact sport globally," Lalduhoma told the crowd.
He urged the young fighters to push for excellence. He wants them to train harder. Pursuing sports brings honor to the state and strengthens local bonds. He expects these athletes to turn their hard work into long-term livelihood opportunities.
