Aizawl: Mizoram will hold elections for its single Rajya Sabha seat on June 18, featuring a head-to-head contest between the ruling Zoram People's Movement and the opposition Mizo National Front. Voting is scheduled to take place at the Assembly building in Aizawl from 9 am to 4 pm, followed by the counting of ballots at 5 pm.
Additional Secretary of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly Secretariat Lalthangmawia confirmed the state's readiness for the process. "All logistical and security arrangements have been put in place for the voting. Counting of votes will be held at the Assembly building," he stated.
The Zoram People's Movement has nominated spokesperson K. Laltluangkima for the seat, while the Mizo National Front has selected advocate and writer Zothansangi Hmar. The ruling party holds a significant advantage in the 40-member Assembly with 27 legislators compared to the opposition's 10 seats.
Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress have officially declared they will not participate in the vote. Congress MLA C. Ngunlianchunga noted his party's decision follows directives from their high command. Similarly, BJP media convener Johny Lalthanpuia confirmed that their two legislators will also abstain, narrowing the contest exclusively to the two primary state parties.
