Aizawl: Mizoram political parties want dead weight off the books. In a Tuesday meeting in Aizawl, party leaders demanded the removal of any names from the draft 2026 electoral roll that lack a clear connection to the 2005 Special Intensive Revision records. The parties want a clean list. They resolved that entries marked as having no linkage must be scrubbed once investigators confirm the status.
The move aims to protect the integrity of the state’s ballot. Leaders urged officials to lean on civil society and NGOs to vet doubtful entries. They seek a precise count. Chief Electoral Officer Garima Gupta reported that enumeration forms for 46,163 voters remained missing following the May and June drive. This group represents over 5 percent of the state electorate.
Official records show 21,295 voters died. Another 13,978 moved away. Officials could not track 8,333 individuals despite multiple visits to their homes. Some residents simply refused the process. "309 voters whose names appeared in the 2025 electoral roll declined to be enrolled during the revision exercise, citing religious reasons."
Mizoram led the pack by digitizing all 828,906 collected forms. The Aizawl district holds the biggest block of voters with 272,000 residents. The smallest count sits in Hnahthial. Citizens have until August 4 to file claims or objections. Officials will wrap up the final rolls by September 6.
