Aizawl: Mizoram Horticulture Minister C. Lalsawivunga officially opened the 13th Horticulture Fair at Lammual this week, calling for a stronger focus on local agriculture to drive economic self-reliance. The event featured Minister of State Prof. Lalnilawma and MIFCO Chairman Lalthazuala, who joined farmers and industry officials to celebrate the state's growing agricultural potential.

Lalsawivunga highlighted the persistent challenge of relying on external supplies for daily needs, even years after the state gained its status. He encouraged Aizawl residents to visit the fair and support local growers directly to improve market access for regional produce. The minister noted the rising national demand for Mizoram's crops, which benefit from the state's widespread organic farming methods.

Encouraging continued innovation, the minister urged farmers to prioritize chemical-free cultivation and explore niche crops that could boost competitiveness. He stated, "The situation highlights the urgent need to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on imports." To support this goal, the government plans to launch a pilot program for dragon fruit production.

The fair served as a showcase for agricultural achievement, concluding with an awards ceremony that honored the Best Horticulture Farmer from each district. These awards recognized individual efforts to grow the sector and improve local livelihoods.
