Aizawl: The Mizoram government launched a digital medical referral system on May 20 to simplify how patients access specialized treatment outside the state. Introduced by Health Minister Lalrinpuii, the platform is part of the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme and aims to modernize public healthcare delivery through technology.
Previously, patients faced long delays while physically processing paperwork through multiple offices. The new system replaces this manual approach with District Screening Committees at every district hospital. These committees assess local cases and coordinate with central referral boards in Aizawl and Lunglei using video conferencing, which cuts down processing time significantly.
While the digital transition focuses on government employees, the system also integrates into the state's broader digital healthcare network. Over 46,000 families are currently registered under the MUHCS online platform. Employees can now pay a 20 rupee fee to request provisional approval and upload their medical documentation directly to the portal.
Despite these digital upgrades, officials noted that some traditional steps remain necessary. General category beneficiaries must still submit documents in person, and final referral approvals for all users require a physical visit to the Directorate of Hospital and Medical Education to verify paperwork. The project was created through a partnership between the Directorate of Hospital and Medical Education and the Mizoram State e-Governance Society.
