Aizawl: The Mizoram Chemists and Druggists Association (MCDA) has issued a stern warning regarding the rapid and unchecked expansion of online pharmacies. During a press conference held in Aizawl on Tuesday, May 19, representatives emphasized that while they are not inherently opposed to digital medicine sales, the current lack of a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework poses significant dangers to public health. The association highlighted concerns that the absence of oversight makes it easier for prescription and addictive drugs to be accessed inappropriately, potentially impacting vulnerable populations.
A primary point of contention for the MCDA is the issue of accountability in the delivery process. Leaders pointed out that medicines are frequently transported by unidentified individuals, leaving no clear record of verification or responsibility. They argued that these systemic gaps could compromise product authenticity and facilitate the distribution of controlled substances without proper medical oversight. The association stressed that their stance is driven by a commitment to public safety and consumer protection rather than concerns over commercial competition.
To highlight these risks and support a broader movement for legislative reform, the MCDA has announced that all pharmacies across Mizoram will remain closed on Wednesday. This shutdown coincides with a nationwide strike by chemists and druggists demanding stricter enforcement mechanisms for the pharmaceutical sector. While hospital-based pharmacies will continue to operate, the association has advised the public to secure essential medications in advance to avoid any disruptions caused by the protest.
