Aizawl: The Mizoram government is pushing to achieve energy self-reliance by fast-tracking key infrastructure projects and restructuring its power sector. During a review meeting held on Friday, State Power Minister F. Rodingliana assessed progress on initiatives designed to improve the state's electricity capacity, including the 132 MW Tuivai Hydel Project located in Saitual district.

This initiative follows a May 29 meeting between Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Chief Minister Lalduhoma. Government officials confirmed that the Detailed Project Report for the Tuivai project is complete, and authorities have committed to securing funding to begin construction as soon as possible. The state is also evaluating the Tuichang pumped storage project to further stabilize its power infrastructure near the Manipur border.

In tandem with these construction projects, the government is moving forward with the corporatisation of the Power and Electricity Department. Engineer-in-Chief Ngursailova Sailo noted that the department is currently unbundling into separate entities for generation, transmission, and distribution. He added that the workforce is cooperative regarding these changes, provided the transition remains beneficial for all parties. He said, "department employees were supportive of corporatisation as long as the move serves the interests of both the public and the government."

The planning session included contributions from MLA and Adviser to the Chief Minister TBC Lalvenchhunga, alongside representatives from the finance and planning departments. The government views this restructuring as a vital step toward enhancing operational efficiency and long-term sector growth.
