Aizawl: The Mizoram government is accelerating its push for power self-sufficiency by fast-tracking the 132 MW Tuivai Hydel Project and moving forward with the corporatisation of the Power and Electricity Department. Power Minister F. Rodingliana chaired a review meeting on June 12 to finalize strategies following high-level discussions between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
Officials from the finance, planning, and power sectors discussed the Tuivai project, located in Saitual district, alongside the Tuichang pumped storage facility. The government has confirmed that the Detailed Project Report for the Tuivai plant is finished and is now prioritizing funding to begin construction as soon as possible.
To improve operational efficiency, the state is reorganizing the Power and Electricity Department into three distinct entities responsible for generation, transmission, and distribution. Engineer-in-Chief Ngursailova Sailo confirmed the department is moving toward this unbundling process. Regarding the transition, Sailo stated, "employees were not opposed to corporatisation, provided it benefits both the public and the government."
The meeting included senior officials and Adviser to the Chief Minister TBC Lalvenchhunga, emphasizing a unified approach to strengthening the state's energy infrastructure. The government expects these structural reforms and capacity expansions to play a critical role in reaching energy independence.
