Shillong: Tourism in Meghalaya is bouncing back. Visitors are returning to the state despite online boycott campaigns that flared up after the August 19 violence in Shillong. That unrest triggered a mass exodus and a wave of hotel cancellations.
Public confidence is now stabilizing. Parambir Singh Sehdave of the Federation of Shillong Hotels said the state is nearing normal tourist levels for this time of year. "Improvement is visible," he said. Cancellation requests have slowed down significantly.
Assam-based social media users drove much of the boycott effort. Their calls did not stop the flow of traffic. Tourist vehicles are rolling into the state again and people are showing up at major landmarks. This return of foot traffic is a lifeline for the local economy, which relies heavily on service and hospitality sectors.
