Shillong: The Meghalaya government kicked off its Read & Rise program on August 26 in Shillong. This initiative functions as a core component of the broader CM-IMPACT effort. Officials set a hard three-month deadline to ensure every student older than seven can read. The project specifically targets foundational learning gaps and those hit hardest by recent classroom disruptions.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma addressed the crowd at the launch. He highlighted the long-term benefits of the initiative. "The investment we are making in the children today is going to start showing results 20 years from now," Sangma said. He insisted that the state must monitor the work closely and adapt as necessary to ensure it succeeds.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui served as the guest of honor. Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri noted that the plan pushes past existing national goals by setting a clear, measurable timeline for early literacy. "If every child can read, that is the foundation of entire quality of education," Mantri stated. "We'll be in a different league altogether if we are successful."
The state also distributed a new Teacher Training Guide for Universal Reading Readiness Across Meghalaya. GREENAMMO published this manual, which the Department of Education sponsored to assist classroom instructors. The program builds on previous efforts like the Meghalaya Learning Enhancement Programme and SSLC guidebooks. Director of School Education and Literacy Richa Kulkarni attended alongside other government officials to signal a full-scale push for higher pass rates in future board exams.
