Shillong: NPP MLA Mehtab Chandee wants Meghalaya to shift its focus toward actual learning outcomes and quality instruction. The Gambegre legislator addressed the state assembly during a discussion on education. She noted the CM Impact programme boosted SSLC pass rates from 54.80 percent to 97.26 percent this year. Dropout rates also dropped from 17.4 percent to 6.7 percent.
Success requires more than just numbers. Chandee said, "The government must prioritise total learning outcomes and critical thinking during the programme’s implementation." She warned that relying solely on test scores is not enough.
Rural students face a massive access gap. HSSLC schools cluster in Shillong and Tura, leaving the countryside behind. Gambegre only has one school in the Medlem area. Students there suffer through three-hour commutes to reach their classrooms. Chandee pushed the Education Department to run a district-wise survey to balance the distribution of these schools.
Beyond traditional schooling, the state needs vocational training. Chandee proposed tailoring new university curricula to local needs. She highlighted the state's agrarian roots and suggested building agriculture-based skilling institutes. These centers would offer professional paths for students who cannot pursue conventional higher education after their SSLC.
