Shillong: Meghalaya will soon add three more polytechnics to its roster. Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui announced the expansion on October 8 during the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Shillong Polytechnic. The state currently hosts four such institutions. Officials aim to bolster technical and skill-based learning statewide.
Rymbui stressed the need for tighter industry connections. He wants curricula to match shifting job market demands. Rymbui posed a pointed question to the audience: "whether automobile engineering graduates were adequately equipped to work on electric vehicles and whether electrical engineering students were receiving sufficient exposure to emerging areas such as solar and wind energy."
The minister urged partnerships between schools and companies. He proposed collaboration with electric vehicle makers, renewable energy agencies, and East Jaintia Hills cement factories for mechanical students. He also suggested moving beyond state-sanctioned posts by funding institutions to hire specific industry experts directly. Innovation is vital to keep students employable.
Shillong Polytechnic hit a major milestone. Founded in 1965 under the former state of Assam, it has produced over 10,000 graduates. Alumni now serve as chief engineers and department heads. The school helped pave the way for the 2022 opening of the Shillong Government College of Engineering and the 2026 launch of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
The state network remains busy. Jowai and Tura Polytechnics opened in 2001, followed by Williamnagar Polytechnic in 2026. MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang attended the event to honor the alumni. Attendees also marked the occasion with a new commemorative book titled "Diamond Jubilee Celebration: Shillong Polytechnic 1965-2026."
