Shillong: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui tabled six new bills this week. The move aims to clean up the private education sector in Meghalaya. State officials want to shutter ghost institutions and centralize oversight. It is a major shift.
The government moved to repeal the International Open University Act of 2011. This entity existed only on paper. It never started operations or deposited mandatory endowment funds. Internal sponsor disputes effectively killed the project before it began.
Martin Luther Christian University faces a massive shake-up. The new bill forces the campus to relocate from Mawphlang to Umphyrnai. Distance education programs will face the axe, and the state will strip away its affiliated colleges. The government also gains the authority to nominate members to the university Board of Governors.
Rymbui pushed for stricter governance across the board. The MIT University of Meghalaya Bill will now name the Governor of Meghalaya as the official Visitor to ensure compliance with state standards. He stated, "Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui introduced six Bills aimed at reorganising the state’s private education sector."
Legislators also introduced two new institutions to the fold. Plans are underway to establish the Sister Nivedita University. It will offer coursework spanning from medicine to design. Simultaneously, the state will create the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian University.
