Shillong: The Meghalaya government has implemented a six-month ban on all state-funded foreign travel for ministers, legislators, and government employees. This austerity measure, formalised on June 10 by the General Administration Department, aims to protect public finances and focus resources on essential development projects.

The suspension impacts both regular and contractual staff, forcing the delay of eight study tours and exposure visits. Approximately 70 participants were scheduled to visit countries including the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States to study fields ranging from healthcare and livestock management to election administration and environmental conservation.

Government sources explained that the decision serves to ensure the prudent use of public funds amidst current economic pressures. While the travel ban is in effect, the administration stated, "The temporary halt should not be interpreted as a reduction in its commitment to international engagement." Officials have been encouraged to use virtual conferences and technical exchanges to continue capacity building.

The restriction contains specific exemptions for travel entirely financed by the central government or international development institutions, provided they receive necessary clearances. By limiting discretionary spending, the state expects to direct more funding toward infrastructure and welfare programs.
