Meghalaya Government Announces Rs 11.3 Crore Makeover for Ward's Lake

Shillong: Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira announced that the Meghalaya state government will soon launch a major beautification project for the iconic Ward’s Lake. The initiative carries a total budget of 11.3 crore rupees, with 7.3 crore allocated for general improvements and 4 crore dedicated to a new light and sound show.

The project focuses on restoring water quality through a chemical-free cleaning and oxygenation process. Officials aim to achieve clarity similar to the Umngot River in Dawki. A private firm will manage these efforts and oversee the lake’s maintenance for the next decade. According to the minister, "The construction of a new steel gate is nearing completion, after which the larger beautification works will commence at Ward’s Lake."

Beyond water treatment, the upgrade includes installing modern lighting systems and refurbishing the stone pathways that surround the landmark. The entire process is expected to span eight months. Authorities confirmed that the site will remain open to pedestrians throughout the duration of the construction.
