Shillong: The Meghalaya Football Association honored state athletes Sanfida Nongrum and Ribansi Jamu on Friday for their vital contributions to India’s SAFF Women’s Championship title. The duo received recognition at a ceremony held at the MFA Football Ground in Shillong after returning from the tournament in Goa, where India secured the championship by defeating Bangladesh on June 6.
Sanfida earned the Most Valuable Player award after scoring in both the semifinal and final rounds. Her teammate, Ribansi, reached a significant career milestone by making her senior international debut during the match against the Maldives. MFA president Hamletson Dohling praised the players for their discipline and hard work, noting that their success reflects the development of women's football in the region. Dohling stated, "Sanfida and Ribansi had earned their place in the national team through determination, discipline and hard work."
In recognition of their performance, the association announced a cash award of Rs 50,000 for each player, which will be formally presented at a future event. During the current ceremony, both athletes received mementoes and shawls. Looking ahead, the pair plans to represent Meghalaya in upcoming competitions before returning to their national and club team duties.
