Shillong: Meghalaya election officials are cleaning house. They have flagged 149,656 voters for removal ahead of the August 5 draft electoral roll publication. This purge targets those listed as absent, shifted, dead, or duplicate. These voters account for 6.37 percent of the state total of 2,349,645.
The breakdown is specific. Authorities identified 74,851 deceased individuals, 37,914 shifted residents, 28,826 absent voters, and 5,899 duplicate entries. Additionally, 2,166 people refused to submit necessary forms. Time is running out. The deadline for turning in verified enumeration forms is Wednesday.
Failure to act means exclusion. Voters should contact Booth Level Officers or use the online portal. Chief Electoral Officer B.D.R. Tiwari noted the state has distributed 99.62 percent of forms, with 22,78,071 digitized. However, 224,435 forms remain unmapped. Ri-Bhoi leads with 23.45 percent of forms unmapped, followed by South West Khasi Hills at 14.53 percent.
Tiwari promised a fair process. He stated, "All such cases will be processed strictly in accordance with the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, following due verification and after providing adequate opportunity to the concerned electors or their family members, wherever applicable."
The state continues to expand. The Election Commission of India added 86 new polling stations to the state. This brings the total count to 3,637. East Khasi Hills remains the largest district with 632,146 registered electors. Officials held meetings with political parties to ensure cooperation and transparency during this revision. This updated database will serve as a primary guide for any future delimitation in the state.
