Shillong: Meghalaya has reached a significant milestone in its rural housing efforts by completing 158,903 homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin. The State Rural Employment Society identified 184,298 total beneficiaries for the initiative and currently has 25,395 additional units under construction.
Government officials report that the recent progress exceeds the total volume of work achieved over the previous decade. They expect all remaining housing projects to reach completion within the next three months.
The central and state governments share the project funding, which provides 1.30 lakh rupees per house, in a 90:10 ratio. The disbursement process occurs in three stages: an initial payment of 52,000 rupees, a secondary installment of 68,000 rupees, and a final 10,000 rupees upon successful delivery. Officials verify each phase of construction through mandatory geo-tagging.
While the project faced initial hurdles regarding land availability, authorities successfully addressed these issues by collaborating with Deputy Commissioners, Block Development Officers, and local communities to secure suitable locations.
