Meghalaya Celebrates Ayurveda Day With Health Camps and Local Traditions

Shillong: Meghalaya observed the 11th Ayurveda Day this Wednesday with a push for better preventive care and nutrition. The state government focused on folding AYUSH systems into standard medical services to boost wellness.

Dr. Joram Beda, Health Commissioner and Secretary, pushed for cooperation between different medical fields. "Different systems of medicine must complement each other to improve overall health outcomes," Beda said during a District AYUSH Society event in East Khasi Hills. He told practitioners to step up in remote areas and fight child stunting and high mortality rates.

Officials have already turned 24 sub-centres into AYUSH Health and Wellness Centres. More upgrades are coming soon. The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy wrapped up a two-week outreach campaign that ran from September 9 to 23. This work brought free clinics to Mynriang, Thangshalai, and Mawryngkneng under the banner of Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow.

Students at the institute shared videos of local plants daily, while the public enjoyed a food festival and scientific talks. The events ended with a Dhanwantari Pooja and a talk from Khasi healer Densing Marngar. At the NEEPCO office in Shillong, Dr. Alka Kharsati led a separate event showing off local herbal treatments and native medicinal plants.
