Shillong: Meghalaya BJP officials have distanced the party from a viral social media post attributed to Yuva Morcha president Mewaker Lyngdoh Pakma. The post, which featured a video of a Cockroach Janta Party agitation at Jantar Mantar, included the inflammatory demand, "Shoot them! Tear gas ain’t enough!" BJP spokesperson Arnab Das stated the party has sought clarification from Pakma, who denied making the remarks. The party claims such social media posts should be verified and noted that accounts are frequently hacked.
The controversy ignited sharp backlash from the Meghalaya Congress and the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. West Garo Hills District Youth Congress president Rikrak M. Sangma slammed the rhetoric as deeply disturbing and contrary to the Constitution. The Congress party announced a four-member delegation will travel to New Delhi on Wednesday to meet with student protesters. Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India denounced the police crackdown on students, calling the use of lathi-charges and tear gas "a heartbreaking assault on the very soul of our democracy." The bishops also voiced concern for activist Sonam Wangchuk, who remains hospitalized at Safdarjung Hospital following his hunger strike.
Meghalaya BJP MLA A.L. Hek sidestepped questions regarding the violence, asserting that the party remains concerned about students regardless of their political affiliation. While the BJP maintains it supports the right to peaceful protest, it accused opposition parties of attempting to hijack the student movement for political gain. The state unit specifically criticized the Congress for alleged efforts to access Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence, citing security threats. Regarding the ongoing NEET paper leak controversy, the BJP noted that 13 arrests have been made and urged patience as the federal government prepares systemic reforms.
