Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP has renewed its criticism of dynastic politics, describing the practice as a structural weakness that hinders merit-based leadership. State BJP general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna stated that when family succession outweighs public service, it creates a culture where leadership is wrongly treated as a birthright.
While the party did not specifically target individual politicians, the critique highlights the influence of prominent families that have shaped the state's political landscape for decades. This includes the family of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma, whose children, including Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, continue to hold significant government roles.
Pohshna distanced the BJP from these established systems by emphasizing the party's focus on supporting first-generation leaders. He framed the organization as a corrective measure against the prevalence of family-based power structures. “The BJP sees itself as a corrective force against dynastic dominance,” Pohshna said.
The state official pointed to the party's recent expansion in regions like West Bengal as evidence that political success is possible without relying on lineage. He argued that by prioritizing internal development, the BJP provides a stable alternative to the regional political dynasties currently active in Meghalaya.
