Shillong: The Meghalaya Two-Wheelers Commercial Permit Holders association has formally petitioned the Regional Transport Authority to crack down on unlicensed bike-taxi services in Shillong. In a complaint addressed to Chairman RM Kurbah, the group asserted that these unauthorized operations violate both the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and the 2020 Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines.
Association members warned that unlicensed operators pose serious risks to passenger safety. These individuals lack mandatory police verification and commercial insurance coverage, creating a significant liability for the public. The permit holders also emphasized that illegal taxi services undermine the state's tax revenue and threaten the financial stability of compliant drivers who follow all statutory requirements.
To address these concerns, the association is calling for immediate enforcement action and the deployment of extra personnel to identify and stop illegal services. Beyond enforcement, they have requested that authorities establish dedicated parking zones for licensed commercial two-wheelers in high-traffic areas such as Khyndailad and Iewduh. The group hopes these measures will restore a fair environment for those who operate legally.
