Guwahati: The Mine Closure Advisory Committee gathered in Margherita on May 30 to evaluate rehabilitation progress and long-term socio-economic strategies for regions impacted by coal mining. Rahul Doley, the Co-District Commissioner of Margherita, chaired the session at the North Eastern Coalfields office alongside Chief General Manager S. P. Dutta.

North Eastern Coalfields officials presented updates on closure activities across several sites, including the Jeypore Dilli, Baragolai, Ledo, and Tipong collieries, as well as the Ledo Open Cast Project. The briefing detailed progress in land reclamation, infrastructure dismantling, safety protocols, and water management. Compliance with statutory requirements and approved closure plans remained a focal point of the review.

Beyond technical reclamation, the committee explored the Just Transition Framework to foster economic stability after mining operations cease. Discussions prioritized vocational training, entrepreneurship, and the expansion of Self Help Groups to generate new income sources for local residents. Participants emphasized that community involvement is vital for selecting alternative economic pathways and maintaining public infrastructure developed during the transition.

Stakeholders established clear timelines for both short-term and long-term projects to ensure accountability. The committee concluded that a coordinated effort between district administrators, local bodies, and community organizations is essential to sustain the region's future once mining concludes.
