Imphal: Khamlang village in the Kamjong District of Manipur recently hosted a comprehensive environmental awareness campaign to mark World Environment Day and Green Sunday. The Khamlang Baptist Church organized the event in partnership with the local Tourism Committee, featuring a cleanliness drive and a community tree planting session.

Former Autonomous District Council member Thotasheng Shanglai spoke during the seminar about the village's tourism potential. He highlighted the ongoing beautification projects led by the committee and the necessity of maintaining a healthy ecological balance for future development.

Environmental and climate activist Robertson Jajo addressed the crowd regarding the urgent need to protect regional flora and fauna. Jajo specifically warned against the loss of native medicinal plants and the depletion of wildlife due to human activity. He urged villagers to cease hunting birds and animals, noting their essential role as pollinators, and suggested capturing photographs of wildlife instead.

Jajo also discussed the broader impacts of global warming, such as irregular rainfall, drought, and the spread of invasive species. He committed to providing the community with saplings to assist in their reforestation efforts. He noted, "The need for increased tree planting is linked to combating global warming, ensuring access to safer drinking water, promoting fresh air, preventing soil erosion, and enhancing soil fertility."

The event concluded with a call for sustainable practices to preserve the ecosystem. Residents were encouraged to prioritize the planting of diverse, food-bearing tree species that support both local livelihoods and animal habitats.
