Imphal: Manipur is clearing out its old gear. Government officials confirmed a 5 crore injection to buy modern sports equipment this year. Much of the current kit dates back to the 1999 National Games and fails to meet modern competitive standards.

The announcement followed the International Olympic Day Run at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam led the event. They emphasized the state’s massive impact on national athletics despite its small population. Minister Konthoujam highlighted the state's rare consistency, noting, "Despite its small population, Manipur has produced 19 Olympians, a remarkable achievement compared to many larger states."

The Chief Minister also pointed to the National Sports University currently under construction in the state. He inspected the site recently. He reminded young athletes that sports must teach discipline above all else. He urged them to avoid drugs and work hard at their studies. The day concluded with a tree plantation drive and a 3-kilometer run. Dignitaries and local leaders joined hundreds of athletes to mark the occasion.
