Imphal: Manipur officials killed the 66 MW Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project. The Cabinet voted to fold the Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Corporation Limited on Wednesday. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led the meeting at the New Secretariat in Mantripukhri.
Locals fought the project for years. They cited ruined farmland, environmental damage, and economic doubt. The project sat on the Leimatak River between Tamenglong and Churachandpur districts. NHPC Ltd held a 74 percent stake while the state government kept 26 percent. That partnership is now finished.
The Cabinet also authorized stipend parity for foreign medical graduates at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences and Churachandpur Medical College. These interns will now earn the same pay as their Indian-trained peers. Officials reviewed 13 agenda items during the session.
Chief Minister Khemchand addressed the public after the session. "We deliberated on key policy matters and strategic initiatives to strengthen governance, accelerate development and advance the welfare of the people. We remain committed to delivering transparent, responsive and people-centric governance for a stronger and more prosperous Manipur," he stated.
