Imphal: More than 31,000 people displaced by ethnic violence in Manipur have returned to their homes. The state government is managing the resettlement through a recovery package worth Rs 1,347.78 crore approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Officials have already released Rs 949.63 crore to fund these repairs and housing projects.
The state received Rs 400.24 crore for 2023-24, Rs 424.36 crore for 2024-25, and Rs 523 crore for 2025-26. While the 2026-27 allocation remains pending, the state has already spent Rs 99.214 crore. Work is moving fast. Authorities built 7,034 houses and repaired 4,159 damaged homes using a mix of PMAY-G grants and MHA funds.
As of September 3, 2026, the number of internally displaced people dropped to 28,899 from a conflict peak of 60,000. Currently, 24,530 people live in 105 active relief camps, and 4,369 stay in temporary housing. Bishnupur holds the most evacuees with 7,892 people across 41 camps. Churachandpur hosts 5,195, while Imphal West manages 4,395. Kangpokpi houses 3,389 in camps and 2,506 in temporary shelters, while Tengnoupal has 1,290 in temporary units.
Police are still working on cases. Between February and August 31, 2026, law enforcement logged 2,638 FIRs related to the conflict. Investigators have made 1,463 arrests and filed charge sheets in 181 cases. The State Home Department report noted, "More than half of the people displaced by the ethnic conflict in Manipur have returned to their homes."
