Imphal: Senapati District Police and the Central Reserve Police Force moved 39 people to safety on Tuesday afternoon. The group fled the villages of Makui Thebram and Makui Pipuram after heavy fighting erupted on the Imphal-Tamenglong Road in Kangpokpi District. Arsonists torched more than 40 homes during the violence. The group included 20 men, 13 women, and 6 minors.
The evacuees reached Senapati by the afternoon. Ten people chose to stay with relatives in the area. The other 29 found beds at the Emesiiphro Community Hall Relief Centre. This pushes the total count at the relief centre to 79. Across the district, 121 people now live as displaced persons.
Ng. Chunthan, spokesperson for the Naga People’s Organisation, praised the move. He noted the group's “highest respect and sincere gratitude to the Senapati District Police and the CRPF for their timely intervention.”
Local civil society groups are still providing food and cash to the victims. Volunteers from Emesiiphro Village and Liangmai Taphou helped house the new arrivals. The Naga People’s Organisation pledged to keep supporting the displaced families as the conflict continues.
