Imphal: Officials in Manipur registered 500 Myanmar nationals Tuesday. The biometric drive took place in the Kamjong district villages of Phaikoh, Shangkhalok, and Aloyo. A team of 40 people managed the work. This group included district administrators, medics, and Assam Rifles soldiers.

The exercise is part of the second stage of Operation Anchor. The Assam Rifles stated the project seeks to establish an authenticated database of displaced Myanmar nationals to support civil administration, facilitate targeted medical relief and strengthen internal security. The first stage of the operation focused on electronic surveillance and fencing along the border.

Manipur shares a 398-km border with Myanmar. Refugees have flooded across that line since the military coup in February 2021. Fighting between the junta and resistance groups drives the migration. Tensions remain high after militant groups burned three border villages in May. The new database aims to stop the anonymity of those entering the state.
