Imphal: Manipur Police arrested two women and seized nearly two kilograms of suspected morphine during an anti-narcotics operation in the Churachandpur district on Tuesday. Acting on intelligence reports, officers from the Churachandpur Police Station raided multiple locations in T. Khonomphai Village to dismantle local trafficking networks.
The suspects were identified as 32-year-old Hoineilhing and 25-year-old Chinneivah, both of whom reside in the village. Officials confirmed the substance is suspected to be morphine, a key precursor used to manufacture heroin. Police sources stated the operation is part of a broader, ongoing campaign to curb the illegal narcotics trade that contributes to public health challenges across Manipur.
Authorities maintain that while morphine is strictly controlled under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, it has limited legal applications. According to officials, "the drug can be legally used for specific medical purposes, including pain management and palliative care, subject to strict regulatory approvals."
The state government continues to prioritize enforcement through targeted raids and the destruction of illicit poppy cultivation sites. Police are currently conducting further investigations to track the origin and distribution plans associated with the seized narcotics.
