Imphal: Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam hit back at protesters in New Delhi on July 23. He dismissed the Save Manipur slogan as a cynical political tool. The minister spoke at the BJP headquarters in Imphal. He accused opposition parties like the AAP, Congress, and SP of orchestrating the unrest. He claimed these groups aim to tarnish the national image.
Konthoujam did not mince words. He stated, The 'Save Manipur' slogan in the Delhi protests is a technique employed to mislead the youth of Manipur. The state will be saved by us, not by those raising slogans at Jantar Mantar.
The Cockroach Janta Party is leading the Delhi demonstrations. They linked the rallies to the ongoing NEET paper leak scandal. Konthoujam questioned the source of the funding. He suggested NGOs hit by Foreign Contribution Regulation Act amendments might be behind the financing. He also noted the government plans to use fast-track courts to handle the NEET case.
Ethnic conflict continues to plague the state. Violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has dragged on for over three years. The conflict has claimed more than 260 lives. Thousands remain displaced since May 2023. Meanwhile, police are hunting for suspects who destroyed a Bailey bridge in Kamjong district on Wednesday. Officials suspect either border militants or local troublemakers.
Students in Imphal have different priorities. Aspirants marched along Keishampat Road on July 23. They demanded a fair and transparent testing process. Over 24 lakh students compete for limited medical seats nationwide. One student participant emphasized that paper leaks destroy years of hard work. The Imphal protesters also voiced support for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk during their rally.
