INDIA Bloc Starts Save Democracy Drive in Manipur

Imphal: Manipur units of the INDIA bloc launched a protest campaign today. They target the Election Commission of India and the current Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Leaders gathered at Congress Bhawan in Imphal to outline the plan. The group includes K. Meghachandra and Dr. Kh. Loken Singh from Congress, plus members from CPI(M), RSP, All India Forward Bloc, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, NCP, and Shiv Sena (UBT).

This push is part of a nationwide "Save Democracy, Save Election, Save Nation" campaign. It runs from October 2 to 8. The coalition scheduled district-level demonstrations throughout this window. They also planned a march to the ECI headquarters in New Delhi on October 6.

Ksh. Shanta of the CPI(M) addressed the crowd. He took aim at the 2023 law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners. He claims the legislation undermines the poll body. The current selection committee features the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition, and a Union Cabinet Minister. Shanta argues this setup favors the government. He noted that the Supreme Court previously favored a committee including the Chief Justice of India. The bloc says the shift allows too much political influence over the commission.
