Imphal: Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh refused to talk about potential territorial exchanges between India and Myanmar on August 7. He spoke to reporters during a two-day seminar in Manipur focused on state demographics. The minister provided no specific details on ongoing boundary negotiations. He told the press, "I request you to wait for some time. We will give a detailed response at the appropriate time."
The silence follows official confirmation from the Ministry of External Affairs. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal admitted in New Delhi on August 4 that both nations are working to settle undemarcated stretches along their 1,600-kilometre shared border. Jaiswal confirmed that discussions are active but did not verify claims regarding a land swap. The current border cuts through Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.
Reports suggest a specific plan to trade roughly 1.4 square miles of territory. This would resolve a 2.8-kilometre gap between Boundary Pillars 65 and 68 in the Chandel district. The area sits directly against the Kabaw Valley in Myanmar's Sagaing Region. An official document dated May 26, 2026, reportedly proposed finishing this border work within three months.
