Imphal: Manipur is moving to reduce its reliance on chemical fertilizers by launching a new organic farming initiative. Minister Y. Khemchand Singh announced the rollout of the program, known as Oorja, during a distribution event held on June 15 for the upcoming Kharif 2026 season.
As part of the initiative, the state government is providing organic fertilizers at a heavily subsidized rate. Farmers can purchase the product for ₹250 per bag, a significant discount compared to the standard market price of ₹480. This effort aims to foster sustainable agricultural practices and improve overall soil health throughout the state.
Addressing concerns over supply shortages, Singh confirmed that the state currently holds a stock of nearly two lakh bags of urea. To manage distribution, the government is now requiring Aadhaar cards and registration documents to ensure transparency. Singh stated, "There is no shortage of fertilisers in the state." Officials from the agriculture department are tasked with monitoring the distribution process across all districts to ensure equitable allocation.
The state has already converted 4,000 hectares of land for organic use and plans to double that figure soon. These steps are part of a broader commitment to sustainable cultivation and modernizing agricultural standards in Manipur.
