Imphal: An unauthorized bridge over the Manipur River is sparking a political firestorm. The project proceeded without official government approval or permits. On July 11, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh claimed he knew nothing about the structure. This admission exposes a massive gap in administrative control.
BJP MLA Paolienlal Haokip attended the inauguration and made the bridge a political issue. He claimed the project was an achievement of the "Government of Khulmigam." He praised local residents for building the span after the state failed to provide necessary connectivity. The legislator now wants the government to reimburse the full cost of construction. He also wants authorities to grant retrospective approval for the structure.
Haokip admitted he previously challenged security forces, including Assam Rifles officers, who tried to stop the work. He alleged those security efforts followed orders from the then Chief Minister. Questions remain regarding safety, land ownership, and environmental clearances. No official agency has verified the structural integrity of the project.
The silence from the state government is deafening. Officials have not ordered an inquiry or explained how a major bridge could be finished and opened in secret. Experts worry the bridge could facilitate smuggling or the movement of contraband. The state must now prove it still holds authority in conflict-affected regions. For now, the bridge remains a symbol of crumbling administrative power.
